There have been some big changes recently in the world of Remote Support Software. Until earlier this year, I had as my remote support software of choice. I liked it because it was affordable, easy to use, and was geared specifically for computer repair technicians. However Crossloop recently, and abruptly, shut the service down after being acquired by AVG. On top of that, you may have heard that LogMeIn recently got rid of the free version of their remote support software, to the dismay of much of the tech community who used it as a quick and easy means of connecting to their client’s machines. As a result of these changes, I’ve received quite a few emails from readers asking what remote connection software I would now recommend. Since I am in the position of looking for a new solution, I decided to do some research and personally test out some of the leading choices in remote desktop support. Free review security software for Windows, Mac, Linux and Mobile Phones. In its latest version, the HouseCall 7.2 has an intuitive interface design and the. Instant Housecall was added by X51 in Oct 2009 and the latest update was made in Jun 2016. The list of alternatives was updated Nov 2018 There is a history of all activites on Instant Housecall in our Activity Log. It's possible to update the information on Instant Housecall or report it as discontinued, duplicated or spam. The Playing Field I was looking for remote connection software that met a few criteria for my own personal needs: • Easy for just a one-man shop to use and manage • Cloud-based • Not free (so I could take advantage of support if needed) • Popular enough to be mentioned or recommended by other techs With that criteria in mind, I found 4 remote connection services that seemed to meet these basic needs of mine: • GoToAssist • LogMeIn Rescue • Instant Housecall • Teamviewer I understand that this is not a comprehensive list of remote connection software. For example, a popular remote connect solution among many technicians is. However, ScreenConnect is a self-hosted solution that requires your computer to act as a server. I personally didn’t want to deal with that extra burden of making sure my computer was up and running with a good connection before I could help someone else. I prefer to have the solution run by the provider on a presumably more reliable connection. Another solution that I use and love is (which is actually an offshoot of LogMeIn), but because it’s free, it doesn’t have the amount of features or support that the premium remote connection services do. For this reason, I’ve left out the free solutions. There are probably still many solutions that I passed over. Honestly, I just didn’t have the time to try out more than four, so I tried to pick the four that had the best reputations among my peers. Testing Methodology After choosing the contenders, I signed up for a trial account of each service (lucky for us, they ALL offer some sort of free trial) and put them through the paces. One thing I must note is that I am rating these services on the features that were available to me in the basic trial version. Some services have other, more premium services that weren’t available in the trial offering. I had a netbook, connected via WiFi and running Windows 7 Starter, sitting next to me that I used as the “client computer”.

I bought the My Passport to copy my files from the My Book. So all my work for several years is on this My Passport. Now I can't get the My Passport to mount even when I leave it connected to my computer overnight. I don't know how to access the files on this My Passport so I can back them up and reformat the drive. Since rebooting did not help, I purchased a new My Passport for Mac HD. When I installed it, the computer immediately 'saw it.' I just left it be and eventually Time Machine started a new backup. The last time I looked it was about 10% finished making the new BU. Next time I noticed, I had a message saying that the device had not been properly ejected. Finder no longer showed this disc. I did a complete shutdown and restarted the computer. Computer still does not see this disc. I use two other external HDs and occasionally get the same 'failure to eject' message, but a reboot has always corrected the situation. Any suggestions? I have an older Mac Mini, but my OS is 10.10.4. Click to expand. 'My Passport' has only a USB connection. I did a SMC reset. This seems to have corrected the problem - at least for the last 5 minutes. I'll feel better if it is still functioning after 48 hours. Consequently, if this is acceptable procedure, I'lll leave this thread open and report back in a couple of days. Thank you so very much for your help. Over the years, I have had a few occasions to turn to the Forum for help. To the best of my recollection you, Mr Cooper, have always responded and your advice has always been sound. Again thank you for your kind and generous help. Glad you were able to resolve your issue. And yes, Cory is a valuable resource, that's for certain! I'm wondering if this thread is another indication that WD drives are, at times, problematic, where as drives from a number of other manufacturers (Seagate, LaCie, etc.) are easier to work with. Myself, I have relied almost exclusively on Seagate drives, having used a number of them for various purposes, and with various interfaces (SCSI, USB, and Firewire). I need to test out some Web site programming on a Linux system and have determined that the Ubuntu distribution is ideal. My question: what’s the best, easiest way to install Ubuntu Linux on my Mac system so I can run all my tests? There are a number of different ways to install Ubuntu Linux on your Mac system, but one of my favorites, hands down, is to install it within the environment. Because it’s literally a one-click download to get it up and running. Now I realize that Parallels Desktop, like, is a commercial Mac application and has a price tag associated with it, but it sounds like this is related to your work and, well, sometimes you have to pay for your tools, right? May 1, 2017 - Parallels is easily the best virtualization software on the Mac, and earlier this year. Installing Linux or Chromium OS in Parallels Desktop Lite. The again, it’s not that expensive at $79. From a testing perspective, the Ubuntu Linux environment within Parallels is functionally identical to running the operating system native on a PC computer, which is nice. It’s just neatly tucked into the Mac OS X environment and — a nice bonus — can run full screen giving you the distinct impression that your Mac is only running Linux, which is bound to impress your geeky friends! Once you’ve installed Parallels Desktop on your computer, simply launch the program and you’ll be given a variety of options for proceeding: The option you seek is on the lower left: “Download Ubuntu Free”. That’s really all you need to do, it’s going to do everything else in a surprisingly automated fashion. Still, let’s keep stepping through the process. First off, is this really what you want? Here’s the description, along with an indication that it’s the Linux 11.04 Desktop distro release of Ubuntu that’s available: Looks good? Click on the button to continue and it’ll start downloading a ready-to-roll Parallels installation image of he operating system: As you can see, it’s about 1.2GB so if you’re on a dialup (is anyone still on a dialup?) it’s going to take a while. With a decent connection, however, it’s not too long to wait and you can always switch to a different window and do something else while you wait. Once it has downloaded, the installation will be uncompressed Literally the next step after it uncompresses and installs is that Parallels Desktop launches the new image and you’ve got Ubuntu running! Note the warning on the bottom, though: “Parallels Tools are outdated. Please reinstall them manually.” Not hard to do but before we update these important display and network drivers, let’s just log in! Click on “parallels” and don’t worry, you don’t need to know the password to proceed Pick an easily remembered password and click the orange “Login” button. You’re up and running. This particular release of Ubuntu Linux goes by the rather odd name of “Oneiric Ocelot”, which, Google assures me, has the following explanation: “Oneiric means “dreamy,” and the ocelot is a domestic-sized cat native to South and Central America.” Now you know. ? Let’s fix that out of date tools issue before you’re done, just so you can see that it’s similarly easy in Parallels Desktop. Along the bottom of the window, you’ll notice that the gear icon has a small black triangle adjacent. Click on it and you’ll see all the configuration options appear: The one we want is the gear within a gear: it’s displayed with a tiny blue element to highlight that your attention is needed. Whether you’re using a Macintosh or a Windows computer, Microsoft Office is a staple throughout the world. While that doesn’t mean everybody uses it, it does mean that almost everybody has to find something that works with it. And yet there are several reasons you might not want to get a copy of Microsoft Office itself. One of those is the price. Few of us can happily afford to shell out $400 for the Standard edition of Office. If you’re looking for a solid Microsoft Office alternative specifically for your Mac, NeoOffice is going to serve you just fine. It’s a commercial fork of the previously mentioned OpenOffice, although the source code is still available for free. Even the educational price of $150 is pricey, especially if you’re a student trying to make ends meet. Perhaps your PC doesn’t have enough resources to handle Office, which is a notorious memory hog. Or maybe you have a second computer that you or other family members use only occasionally for document creation, and you don’t want to shell out for another Office license. Whatever the reason, it’s good to know that there are alternatives out there — all cheaper than Microsoft’s standard, and a couple that are even free. We sorted through nine contenders, some for Mac and some for PC (and a couple for both), to find out the best non-Office office suites available. We limited our search to true suites — products with at least two of the three main components of Office: a word processor, a spreadsheet application and a presentation program. We also didn’t bother with online-only office suites; we wanted ones you could install on your own PC. (We have already looked at several online suites in a different.) Office alternatives: Mac by Ryan Faas In addition to concerns about price, we Mac users face our own unique Office challenges. We often need to wait six months or longer after Office for Windows gets updated before we get a comparable version. (Office 2007 for Windows went on general sale last January, and we won’t get Office 2008 for Mac until sometime this fall.) And even when it does ship, we get only some of the components. There has never been a Mac version of Access or Publisher, for example. Even the staple three applications of Word, Excel and PowerPoint sometimes lack features found in their Windows counterparts. In fact, with Microsoft’s new Office 2007 file formats, we can’t even directly open and edit files from the most recent versions of those core applications. Until Office 2008 for Mac comes out, we either have to ask people to save documents in the older format or rely on a that is still in beta. So my search for the best alternative to Office wasn’t just about money. It was about getting access to those applications and features that Mac users don’t get out of Office and about trying to find something that natively supports the new Office 2007 file types. From the outset, I expected I might have to make compromises. IWork, you work First on the list of potential Office replacements was Apple’s $79, which provides a word processing and page design application called Pages and a presentation app called Keynote. That’s two components, but so far iWork doesn’t offer a replacement for Excel (though rumors have been floating around for quite some time that Apple will add that eventually). One of the first things you notice about Pages is that it isn’t just a word processor. It also has extensive (and very intuitive) page-layout features, making it a tool that can replace not only the capabilities of Word but also those of Publisher. This is great if you need to make signs or design newsletters, or if you just want to have fun laying out all kinds of richly styled projects filled with graphics. I've been nostalgic lately, and wanted to play a couple of great old games -- 'A Mess Of Trouble' and 'Another Fine Mess', Ray Dunakin's amazing World Builder games. So I dug around, and got started with vMac. I've got my ROM loaded, and my system dsk's. When I run vMac, there's no error messages, but. Nothing happens. Blank white screen. I can access vMac's menus, but there doesn't seem to be any way to manually start the thing working. I'm working on a Windows 98 machine. Update: Everything is working well so far, except that the System 7.0.1 disc image files are in.smi form, which apparently can only be opened correctly by Apple Disc Copy? I don't have that, as I'm working on a Windows system, so I don't know if I have a way to get to the '.image' file within. Stuffit trial version will unpack the.bin that Apple's website hosts, but it doesn't treat the.smi as an archive file of any sort. Any tips on how I might be able to open this.smi and get the.image? After that I'm pretty sure everything will work out well. EDIT: I found another forum site where a user has supplied a link to a set of Mac-on-Stick files he put together, including the opened.image files. Working on it now. EDIT2: Jackpot! Here's a link to the forum page I just mentioned, for anyone else who's looking: ~G. This is awesome. I grew up on this system. One problem though. Question: Q: iOS app emulator for Mac i'm wondering if a product of this sort is somewhere in the pipeline. Now that it's running, I'm attempting to install some software. Once I have the files there in the Mac emulator, trying to run them gives me a 'The program that created this file is not here etc' message. But this /should/ be an application, which should run itself. Did you manage to install working programs onto your own Mac-on-Stick, NATO? EDIT: It seems like the files have a size of 0 bytes after copying over to the emulator, using HFVExplorer. If I try to copy the.hqx's whole, it says 'no HQX header found'. Stuffit will extract the.hqx's with no errors, except that the resulting files have no extensions whatsoever. They do have a file size, until I copy them to the emulator. But if I label the ones that should be ReadMe's as.txt manually, then copy it over, it will open in TeachText after giving an error message, and be perfectly legible. Filtering for unique values and removing duplicate values are two closely related tasks because the displayed results are the same — a list of unique values. The difference, however, is important. When you filter for unique values, you temporarily hide duplicate values, but when you remove duplicate values, you permanently delete duplicate values. A duplicate value is one where all values in the row are an exact match of all values in another row. Duplicate values are determined by the value displayed in the cell and not necessarily the value stored in the cell. For example, if you have the same date value in different cells, one formatted as '12/8/2017' and the other as 'Dec 8, 2017', the values are unique. It's a good idea to filter for or conditionally format unique values first to confirm that the results are what you want before removing duplicate values. Delete Duplicates for Outlook enables you to delete duplicate e-mail messages from your Outlook mailboxes. Delete Duplicates for Outlook Express & Windows. Is powerful tool for detecting and deleting duplicate e-mails for Microsoft Windows Mail & Outlook Express programs.? Note: If the formula in the cells is different, but the values are the same, they are considered duplicates. For example, if cell A1 contains the formula =2-1 and cell A2 contains the formula =3-2, as long as the value is formatted the same, they are considered to be duplicate values. If the same value is formatted using different number formats, they are not considered duplicates. For example, if the value in cell A1 is formatted as 1.00 and the value in cell A2 is formatted as 1, they are not considered duplicates. You can create a rule to color code unique or duplicate data in your sheet.
